Beyond the bustling castle, there is a quieter side to Český Krumlov—a place where Gothic stone meets Baroque light. I designed this 3-hour journey to help you feel the true soul of our medieval town. Together, we'll walk through sacred landscapes where the daily lives of ancient monastic orders and powerful prelates come to life, and I'll help you decode the symbols hidden in our most beautiful landmarks.

Highlights from Český Krumlov's Religious History

Protestant rebels, and Renaissance alchemists crossed paths.

• The Catholic Island During the Hussite Wars

  During the 15th-century Hussite Wars, when much of Bohemia was engulfed in anti-Catholic rebellion, Český Krumlov remained a stubborn stronghold of Catholicism. Its ruler, Ulrich II von Rosenberg, initially dabbled in Utraquism (a moderate reformist movement) before switching back to the Catholic fold. He forged papal documents, hid Catholic treasures, and provided a safe haven for priests fleeing radical Hussites, preserving the town's medieval Catholic institutions intact.

• The Rosenberg "Dual Identity" (St. Vitus vs. The Castle)

  Built between 1407 and 1439, the Church of St. Vitus was intentionally placed on the town's highest inner ridge to dominate the skyline, directly rivaling the Castle across the Vltava River. While the castle represented feudal, aristocratic power, St. Vitus represented the civic identity of the townspeople. However, the Rosenbergs kept a tight grip on it—using it as a family mausoleum.

• Alchemists, Jesuits, and the Counter-Reformation

  In the late 16th century, William of Rosenberg transformed Český Krumlov into a hub of the Counter-Reformation.

  • He invited the Jesuits to the town in 1586, building them a massive college that elevated Český Krumlov's ecclesiastical standing.

  • Paradoxically, William was deeply obsessed with alchemy, occultism, and finding the Philosopher's Stone. He hosted famous alchemists like Edward Kelley and John Dee at court, creating an unusual environment where Jesuit orthodoxy and Renaissance occultism existed under the same roof.

• Petr Vok: The Protestant Rebel's Grand Gesture

  William's younger brother, Petr Vok von Rosenberg, was a devout Protestant (a member of the Unity of the Brethren).

  • In the late 1500s, he converted the 14th-century Gothic Church of St. Jošt into a Protestant temple dedicated to the Holy Trinity, handing it over to the town's Lutheran population.

  • However, heavily in debt, Petr Vok was forced to sell the town to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II in 1602. The Catholic Emperor immediately expelled the Lutherans, stripped the church of its Protestant branding, and handed it back to the Jesuits.

• Joseph II and the Decaying Church Turned Apartment Building

  In 1787, Habsburg Emperor Joseph II enacted a series of rationalist religious reforms, shuttering hundreds of monasteries and "superfluous" churches across his empire.

  • St. Jošt Church was deconsecrated, sold to private buyers, and stripped of its interior.

  • Rather than being demolished, the former church was converted into residential apartments, a brewery, a theater, and later a museum. Today, its landmark Baroque tower still looks like a church from the outside, but inside lies a residential building.

• The Synagogue with Structural Milestones

  By the late 19th century, Český Krumlov's growing Jewish community built a neo-Romanesque Synagogue (completed in 1909).

  • Engineering-wise, it was the first building in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to feature an advanced reinforced-concrete structure.

  • The synagogue survived WWII intact (having been used as a storehouse by the Nazis) and was restored after the fall of Communism to serve as a cultural center and memorial.

• Secret Tunnels and Monastic Life

  The town's double monastery complex (built for the Minorites and Poor Clares in the 14th century) is one of the largest in Central Europe. It was connected directly to the Castle via an elevated, covered corridor running atop the famous Cloister Bridge (Plášťový most). This allowed the nobility to walk directly from their private apartments into the monastery's high choir stalls without stepping foot on the public streets.

• The House of Prelates (Prelátura): We will explore this hidden fortress of faith. I love sharing the stories of the high-ranking clergy who lived here and the beautiful Gothic and Renaissance details hidden behind its massive walls.

• The Jesuit District: We'll walk through the former Jesuit College and Jesuit School, uncovering how this powerful order transformed the town into a center of learning. We'll end this portion in the peaceful Seminary Garden, where we'll enjoy one of my favorite panoramic views of the castle.

• Little Street Chapels: As we walk, I'll point out the charming "little chapels" and sacred niches tucked away in the narrow lanes, each with its own local legend.

Inside the Monasteries

We will step into the world of the Minorite and Poor Clare orders, a place of peace and preservation.

• Gothic Cloisters: We'll walk through the quiet galleries together, where I can point out the unique lunette paintings and murals that have survived for centuries.

• Gardens & Traditional Crafts: We will explore the peaceful courtyards. Today, they are alive again with local artisans keeping our traditional Czech crafts from fading away.

• The Chapel of St. Wolfgang: I'll explain how faith and social life were woven together to create the unique cultural fabric of South Bohemia.
